An edited volume is often a mixed bag not all chapters are created equal. This collection, however, is predominantly high quality, with contributions from experts like Odom, Stone, and Zaloga. All war fighting domains are covered in a fairly evenhanded manner, though the ground forces (as should be expected from a book on the Soviet military) recieve the bulk of the attention.
Zaloga&aposs chapter on the strategic forces (which covers up to the 21st century in contemporary Russia) is a welcome incl An edited volume is often a mixed bag not all chapters are created equal. Zaloga's chapter on the strategic forces (which covers up to the 21st century in contemporary Russia) is a welcome inclusion for the general reader. And, essays on the role of the military in internal security, and civilian-mitary relations, round out the collection nicely.
I have not read the 2010 edition, but assume it brings many of the scholars' predictions about the future of the post-Soviet Russian military into accord with developments since 2002 (including the "New Look" reforms that followed its poor showing in Georgia in 2008). Though, of course, that is far beyond the scope of a history of the Soviet military. . daha çox

My Reading List for Modern Chinese History
A reading list I suggest for Chinese history in modern period: from late Qing to the reform and opening-up. "Modern" is a very complex concept, to avoid confusion, here I just use it to refer to the time period mentioned above. I divided the long period into sperate short periods chronically, and added some special topics for supplement. I came up with this idea, listing some books for people to read, some time ago, and I spent several hours in the past few days and finishes writing it. During my research, I found that many topics were so neglected by the English academia, that I can't even find some introductory books for my list! So I used some journal articles instead, and unwillingly dropped some topics. I am not a history major, so I can't garuantee the professionality of this list. Also, I have only read part of the books I listed, these books I'm sure they are great. For the others, I am only aware that they are great or important books, I haven't got the time to read them yet. Nonetheless, I think this list still is worth attention and may help you familiarize the history of china during this period.

A joint enterprise of the Research Institute of Korean Studies (RIKS) at Korea University and the Institute of East Asian Studies (IEAS) at the University of California, Berkeley, Cross-Currents seeks to balance issues traditionally addressed by Western humanities and social science journals with issues of immediate concern to scholars in China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. This English-language journal includes scholarship on material from the sixteenth century to the present day that has significant implications for current models of understanding East Asian history and culture. Embedded in a web-based platform with functions for collaboration, discussion, and an innovative editing and publishing process, the open-access e-journal uses new technologies to facilitate a dialogue among East Asia scholars around the world that is enhanced by audio-visual and multilingual capabilities. The semi-annual print issues of Cross-Currents (University of Hawai’i Press) feature research articles from the online journal (the journal of record for indexing and citation purposes).

Dr. Yochanan Shachmurove is Professor of Economics and Business at the City College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He has worked with Harvard Institute for International Development advising the government of Ukraine with regards to its macroeconomic policies, including energy and natural resources issues. He has served as a Guest Editor for three special issues of the International Journal of Business, two of them dealing with Financial Markets of the Middle East, and one co-edited with Nobel Laureate Professor Lawrence Klein about the BRICs (Brazilian, Russian, Indian and Chinese economies), and as a Guest Editor for two issues of the Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance and Business Ventures. He is the Editor of the Proceedings of the Academy of Entrepreneurial Finance, 2002.

Dr. Shachmurove has published extensively in the areas of economics, finance and management with more than 100 refereed papers and more than 110 papers accepted for presentation at professional meetings throughout the world, travelling to numerous numbers of countries. Professor Shachmurove’s main research interests are in applied econometrics (including vector auto regressions, Bayesian vector auto regressions, emulative neural networks, non-linear deterministic systems, and chaos), international economics, industrial organization, entrepreneurial finance, advanced futures and options.
